There are and were several Business US Routes in Illinois. Business, City, Bypass, and Alternate routes were used for old alignments of routes after the parent route was relocated to new or different roads.
"Business" routes were usually an original alignment thru towns that allow access to center cities ("Downtown") when a new route was used for the parent route.
"City" routes were used for similar purposes, and in fact, many "City" routes were changed to "Business" routes.
"Alternate" routes tended to be longer, or between towns. For example, Alternate US-30 was the original US-30 from Chicago to Sterling.
"Bypass" routes were usually used to run a route around a city, while the original route remained.
There were also 2 "Toll" US routes, 30 and 41.
On the 1939 and 1940 IL maps there was a "Belt Line" US-40 shown from US-40 north of Collinsville to west of Collinsville on what is now Belt Line Road. In 1941 US-40 was rerouted on the former Belt Line and the old route became City US-40.
